There are many times in life where it can literally pay to give the impression that you are smarter than you really are - employment interviews for one. Try to remember though that this may backfire on you if you actually get the job as pretending to be highly intelligent can only take you so far! Here are our top 5 tips.

Don't talk too much. Intelligent people tend to think a lot about things and only volunteer something that is really worthy of consideration. Use props. This could be anything from glasses, to classical novels, pipe's or University sweatshirts with "Yale", "Oxford" or "Cambridge" written on them. If you do pick a university jumper then be sure to do some background research on college names just in case you have to come up with a back-story. Speak slowly and clearly. Clever people are used to having to spell things out for the commoners. Use words like "quite right" and "indeed" to agree with what other clever people say - they like that. Work on your pronunciation and if necessary your accent. Try not to say "like" 20 times in a sentence. If you are at a party then do the rounds introducing yourself to people and take note of what some of the clearly intelligent people are saying, you can then repeat these anecdotes to the next group of people. Don't smile too much. You'll appear nervous and will likely give the game away. Try to appear contemplative.

Of course, the best way to appear intelligent and knowledgeable is to become intelligent and knowledgeable. Consider reading some classical literature or listening to classical music - visiting some galleries or joining an appreciation society.
